"Made in the back and sold in the front." - The motto written on the window tells it like it is. This cute, clean, and delicious shop is family owned and operated, but the interior looks almost like a knock-off Dunkin' Donuts (this isn't a bad thing- its charming)! Although this gem of a shop is the only one around and not the most convenient to get to, it seems like many locals gladly choose it over the reigning shop of the region (DD). A running cop car parked outside, the cops themselves huddled in the corner booth, city guys with Boston accents sitting at the counter, older men sipping what is probably their third coffee of the morning at 8:20 on a Saturday, dolled up "Medfid" ladies stopping in for an iced coffee on their way to the gym; this place sure has much more character than any Dunkin' Donuts I have been to around Boston.
The iced coffee at Demet's was the stand-out of my experience there. I went with my sister Ivy, and she got a BANANA iced coffee which was so so so awesome. I stuck with a modest cinnamon hazelnut, which was also very tasty. We also got a half dozen donuts, consisting of two "blueberry nugget," one boston cream, one chocolate coconut, one honey dipped, and one honey cake. The blueberry nugget donuts were recommended in all of the reviews that I read, and they were worthy of their online ravings. As a generalization, the cake donuts that I tried there were much better than the yeast ones. My favorite was the honey cake- the texture was so dense and really held the honey glaze better than the honey dipped yeast donut. I didn't have enough room to try the boston cream donut that morning, and by the time I was hungry enough for it (Sunday night...), it had been sitting out too long and definitely didn't taste the way it should've. Overall, the donuts at Demet's were good, but not awesome. I would go back there just to get the banana iced coffee, though, and obviously I would get a donut too (I need to give the boston cream a fair chance, after all, right?).
After Ivy and I had taken bites out of most of the donuts, Ivy gave into temptation and her overwhelming craving for salt after consuming sugary donuts and bought a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. For people who like this sort of thing, it looked great. I for one am not an egg person, though, but appreciated the fact that, unlike most places who serve breakfast sandwiches, Demet's uses fresh eggs which they fry when ordered. And, the sandwiches are cheap, too! Ivy's was $3.35, which seemed like an absolute bargain considering the size of the bagel alone.
Demet's is a cute shop, with friendly workers and very reasonable prices. A convenient stop for me on the way in or out of Boston, I'm sure I will visit again.
